Here at Storm ID, we work on a lot of interesting projects. Turning our attention away from those for a second, though, we realised that there are some really interesting people working on those projects, too. And, let’s be honest: it’s our Storm Troopers who make the magic happen here. This week we caught up with Mike – our Head of Projects, and the most recent winner of the Storm Trooper Award. He’s a busy man in high demand, so we only had time to ask him 11 quick-fire questions.
Hey Mike! Thanks for meeting with me. I guess it makes sense to start at the beginning – what’s your background?
I went straight to uni after “leaving” school, finally deciding after uni that I would become Tom Cruise in Cocktail. Eventually, I shelved that dream next to the tequila and joined RBS to work in large scale software projects before moving over to Storm during the meltdown of the financial sector. Haven’t looked back since.
You were awarded Storm Trooper award for “creating order where there was chaos”. Do you find that it can be a challenge keeping projects on track?
Yes, but the Storm Values help keep me going.
How did you come to be at Storm? How long have you been here?
A recruitment consultant did something a recruitment consultant doesn’t normally do and read between the lines of my CV. She astutely assessed that I would be able to apply the transferable skills I had built up at RBS to the vacant PM role at Storm. Luckily for me she was right and I’ve been here for over 6 years.
What does a typical day look like for a Project Manager?
Busy. Lots of meetings, lots of phone calls, lots of coffee.
If you could live for a day as any famous person, who would it be and why?
Bowie or Prince? Bowie or Prince? Bowie during the Ziggy years. Prince during the Purple Rain years. Neither now because they are both dead.
There are loads of cafes and restaurants near the office to go on your lunch dates with Kev. Where’s your go-to lunch place in Leith?
Cafe Domenico – their food is really good.
What would you say is your favourite thing about Storm?
I like Storm for many reasons, but the main reason is the individuals I work with and how motivated they are to do the best they can. They are very skilled at what they do and I think Storm is very good at nurturing, respecting and appreciating its employees.
Do you have any hidden talents?
Which song has to be part of the office playlist? Or do you completely ignore Kev’s music taste and rock out to something entirely different through your headphones?
Headphones mainly. But I don’t actually listen to music, I just wear them to ward off desk visitors.
Charming. Finally, the most important question of them all: are you a coffee or tea kinda guy?
Coffee during the week and tea at the weekend. Need to let your hair down once and a while.
Thanks for your time, Mike!
In the time it took us to do this interview, Mike has been searched out by a developer, he’s received 4 emails and his phone just started ringing. He really is a busy guy. Go forth and resolve the chaos, oh calm one.
