“A hero can be anyone.”
We’ve got a talented bunch of Storm Troopers here, from Project Managers to UX Designers, who produce exceptional results for our clients. But, what about the unsung heroes that work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep everything ticking over for the rest of us? If it wasn’t for our IT support at Storm, we’d be as good as lost. After all, everything we do relies on IT! This month, we caught up with Greig, our Senior IT Support Engineer, to find out how he landed his role and what he gets up to outside of work.
Hi Greig! Let’s get started with your background. Did you go to college or university?
I didn’t, actually. After I left Peebles High School, I went travelling in Australia for 10 months as I didn’t fancy going into further education immediately. When I got back from Oz, I managed to get straight into an IT company so I didn’t bother going to college or university.
How did you become interested in the world of IT?
I didn’t know what career path to take after high school, however, I’ve always been keen on computing, so I figured IT would be a good place to start. I tried out different areas of IT and chose to pursue the system administration side of things. Thankfully, I haven’t looked back on that decision so far!
So, how did you end up at Storm? Have you been here long?
After I moved to Edinburgh from Peebles, I started looking for work in the city and fortunately, Storm had a position available for IT Support. I’ve been here since August 2016 and it’s been great.
What does your role entail? What do you enjoy most about it?
Primarily, my role is to ensure the internal IT is working correctly and maintained. This can vary from making sure workstations and servers are working properly to provisioning equipment for new personnel starting at the company. Since my role can be quite responsive, I do enjoy the freedom to deal with whatever tickets when I want rather than being stuck with a set queue of tasks.
You’re definitely a lifesaver sometimes! What has been your favourite project to work on so far?
I’ve been working on some interesting projects involving Cyber Essentials and GDPR. Admittedly, some of the work hasn’t been the most thrilling, but it has been good to try out software that has some great features and benefits to help with data security.
So, how do you like to spend your time in the city when you’re not at work?
I’m a season ticket holder at Heart of Midlothian FC, so usually every second weekend I’m at Tynecastle to watch them play. Edinburgh is a great city, so it’s nice just to walk around and visit some of the local pubs and try out different beers.
It’s a beautiful place, for sure. Do you have any hobbies or hidden talents we might not know about?
I’m a keen gamer and admittedly, probably spend too much time playing games! But, I do try to get out and about when I can.
If you could be any famous person for a day, who would it be and why?
It’s a tough choice, but I would say Elon Musk. I think the companies he’s been involved in such as SpaceX, Tesla, Hyperloop and SolarCity are really exciting and it’d be interesting to get an insider’s look into them.
Good choice! If you could add one song to the office playlist, what would it be?
I’ll listen to anything, to be honest. I’m not really into music, so I’ll happily just play any random tunes just as a background noise.
And finally, what’s your favourite thing about Storm?
The people at Storm are great and really easy to get on with. Combine that with the work perks, such as table tennis and beer Fridays, I can’t complain. It was strange for me at first when I started here, as I wasn’t used to these perks in the workplace!
They’re pretty great, we can’t lie! Do you want to enjoy these perks, too?
Then, we’d love to hear from you! Have a look at our current vacancies or email your wonderful CV to firstname.lastname@example.org. You could very well be our next Storm Trooper!
